Local Adelines celebrate a decade of harmony The local lyrical ladies of Harmony North Chorus Sweet Adelines have been singing songs and humming hymns around town for ten years.
"There have been memorable moments ... many happy moments, a few sad ones, but mostly the moments have been magnificently musical, " said Karen Naish, chorus member. The group began in 1997 with seven Sweet Adelines who wantet to start a new chorus in Thornbury. Advertising in local papers paid off, and 24 prospective members attended the first rehearsal night. More joined in the coming weeks. "The first year was exciting," said Naish, explaining that chorus members learned breathing techniques and proper posture for singing. The most important lesson learned was how to harmonize, something the four part harmony chorus shows off at each performance. In the fall of 1998 a special evaluated performance earned them international recogniction as a chapter of the Sweet Adelines. The chorus held a charter party in June 199 to celebrate the official induction. May 1999 marked the chorus' first competition, and the chorus competed in the region annually for all ten years. |
